The duo started in a short MGM called "Puss Gets the Boot," which was to theaters on February 20, 1940. Producer Fred Quimby asked William Hanna and Joseph Barbera them to draw a short one, and the duo of animators had the idea of a design where a cat chasing a mouse. In this short Tom was called Jasper and Jerry was called Jinx. Only after producers named the characters of "Tom and Jerry". William Hanna and Joseph Barbera wrote and directed over 113 episodes between 1940 and 1957, 93 of these episodes were produced by Fred Quimby (despite the prominence of his name in the production credits, artistically speaking, Quimby did not have any involvement in the production of the animated series) when MGM Cartoon Studio (where the drawings were produced) was closed, causing the end of the original design. The last of the 114 episodes was released in 1958. The original series won the Oscar for best animated short seven times.

The mains:
Tom
Tom loves chasing Jerry the mouse, but almost every time I try to capture it, live it esborrachando, catching or getting in trouble.
Jerry
Friendly mouse, which usually escape from Tom while they are enemies. Jerry loves cheese and also ready with Tom
Spike the Bulldog (Spike the Bulldog) [edit]
The Bulldog who lives in the house of Tom In almost all his appearances, appears defending Jerry Tom (but that does not mean they are friends), or simply beating him when Jerry ready. Spike and his son Tyke already have their own episodes (one of them, a stray dog trickster tries to escape the wagon and put Spike in its place, since dogs off leash will be collected. On the other, the hosts give output, and it's up to Spike do not let the black cat get Butch, who wants to party with friends). And in one of the episodes of the design The Tom and Jerry Comedy Show (produced by Filmation), Spike and Droopy Dog are construction workers, being headed by McLobo (Wolf) (which is typically shown in the drawings Droopy as your enemy is when practicing wrongdoing or improper or attempts to escape from prison, when both are vying for the love of the beautiful Red Riding Hood (Little Red Ridding Hood)). When Droopy and Spike are tasked with finalizing a construction in record time the next day, Droopy becomes a victim of sleepwalking, which makes Spike puts you to do all the work while you sleep. In the end, the boss Droopy wins the right to play the rest of the day while Spike takes evil. Spike never appeared in episodes produced Rembrandt Films, but makes a few appearances in the episode "Matinee Mouse" produced by Sib Tower ¹ ² Productions (in this episode (as well as in the episode "Shutter Bugged Cat", also from Sib Tower ¹ ² Productions) are reused scenes of old designs, but in the end, there is a scene with unprecedented Spike beside Tom and Jerry). In the comic version, Spike is called Goldfish, and their skin color is brown instead of gray
Tyke
The cub Spike ends up being the victim of some fights between Tom and Jerry, which leads her father to want to beat Tom Depending on the stories, Tyke can be a baby or a child. In the comic version, Tyke is called Biluca, and like his father, his fur is mostly brown in color
